The Allure Of Online Business

by daveman on September 1, 2010

People today are scrambling to find ways to augment their incomes. In this time of recession, many people look for a way to earn either as a replacement for what they currently do, or something to complement their existing income. Perhaps one of the best ways to earn extra money is by starting an online business. You can sell a service or a product, either way, doing business online is cheaper than having to set up a physical store.

When setting up a physical store, there are many expenses to consider. Starting with the business permit, which costs money and is a hassle to get. Then there’s the rent, unless you have your own place in a commercial area. The staff you hire will have to get paid monthly. Then you need to renovate the store, install a security system, add furniture, pay the utility bills, and many more! Try to add all those expenses up, and let’s see if you are still keen on starting your own brick and mortar store for your business.

Now, for a business that is online, here’s what you would likely spend for: a domain name (roughly $5 a month, more or less), someone to build your website, someone to market your website and a “click to buy” service. Not much right? But also remember, you can lessen that even further if you really want to save. You can use a free blog service for starters (many small businesses use Multiply or WordPress), you can bypass the website developer then since free blogs usually have a relatively simple template and layout for you to work on, and as for marketing, you can even learn SEO, or search engine optimization, on your own.

Then there’s the “click to buy” service. How can you bypass that service? Well, you can start by being a trustworthy individual and have people wire transfer the money to your account, or you can use paypal (which is a free service). Though the problem with these is that though you are trustworthy, your buyer may not, so stick with paypal. A paid service will work better of course, but there are numerous workarounds. So how much have you spent now with an online business? Basically nothing except your time.

Of course when starting an online business, many things are to be considered that are not mentioned above. But the overall gist of this article is to show that doing business online costs way less than doing business in a physical store. Also, and perhaps the best thing about working on the Internet, is that you have the freedom to work wherever you want to. You can work from home, or on the beach while sipping margaritas in a coconut with the little umbrellas. Though of course you’d have to be connected all the time so it’s worth it to invest in a sound data plan for your phone so you can check online orders and your emails regularly. Unless you enjoy doing daily commutes and the stresses of working in a cramped space, there’s no bypassing having to pay for a good phone and data plan.
